Exceptional strength
Both the impact resistance and bending strength of plastics are high. This means that if low weight and high strength are both priorities, plastic is often chosen in preference to metal.
In the car industry, for instance, plastic components are increasingly used to replace metal parts like body panels and bumpers. Over the past decade, several hundred kilos of metal have been replaced by plastic materials in an ordinary car, improving fuel economy, and thus protecting the environment.
In the aviation industry, even load-bearing wing components can be manufactured from plastic, which also reduces aircraft weight and thus, fuel consumption. |
