Primo has developed a new eco-friendly greenhouse gutter made from off-cuts and damaged or worn out gutters that would otherwise be unusable. The gutters are converted into a new raw material from which a new gutter can be made.
Reused greenhouse gutters made from old and damaged gutters
The regrinded and powdered plastic from the old gutter is used for the inner layer of the gutter and is available in all sorts of colours. The outer layer is intentionally white. This ensures optimum light reflection back into the greenhouse, which benefits plant growth.
The reused greenhouse gutters have several environmental-friendly properties such as:
Water efficiency: The gutters are part of a closed-loop drainage system that collects and recirculates water. This system significantly reduces water consumption, using approximately 95% less water than traditional open field cultivation.
Reuse: The process reduces waste and extends the lifespan of the materials. This reuse approach contributes to circular economy principles by reducing the need for new resource extraction and waste generation.
Energy Efficiency: The white outer layer optimises light reflection inside the greenhouse. This design choice helps to maximise the use of available sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting and saving energy.
Sustainable practices: The greenhouse gutters allow lettuce and herbs to be grown directly in the gutter system. This approach promotes efficient use of space and reduces the amount of land required for cultivation. By growing crops in a controlled environment, it also minimises the need for chemical pesticides and herbicides, contributing to healthier and more sustainable farming practices.
